To describe Disembowelment´s music as “crushing, ruthless, desolate, impressive doom-death metal with grindcore intrusions” would be just a bold and partly successful effort. This band is sort of a forgotten act clad in mystery, since their releases were scarce and hard to find in most of the cases. Fortunately for us all, Relapse Records has re-issued the material recorded by Disembowelment and the presentation has been quite accurate and lush; the layout and artwork fit perfectly with the peculiar artistic vision of the Aussies, far from sculptures, graveyards and so on. The release hereby reviewed consists of 2 CDs (there´s also a limited 3-CD edition); the first one includes the milestone “Transcendence Into The Peripheral” album originally released in 1993, while in the second disc we can find the “Dusk” MCD´92, the “Mourning September” demo´90 and a song featured in a compilation as well. This Australian act arising from the mists of the cult, old-school scene really deserve some eulogies, really blazing eulogies I´d say. Listening to Disembowelment, a doom metal acolyte is able to snatch the essence breathen by modern bands of the genre as Evoken or Esoteric, to name just a couple.
The most shocking thing when hearing Disembowelment is the presence of some typical grindcore elements in their music, such as blastbeats and screams, but once you get familiar with them (and the band´s huge ability to create amazing music doesn´t makes it difficult, in my opinion), they don´t mean any discordance at all in the overall impression of the music. Devastating distorted chords decadance with bleak guitars which drip dour notes; a funeral waltz dedicated to arcane, desolate sentiments. This music is one of the utmost expressions of darkness and horror ever heard. Vocals are thoroughly extreme, shifting from ultra dark growlings to the aforementioned horrific screams, summoning your soul´s dark side through the verses. Sound is slightly unclean for darkness´ sake, and we thank the production for it; the atmosphere achieved is powerful and pounding. Groundbreaking songs which immerse you into a deep chasm beyond the gates of blackness. Excellent! A must? Guess it is...
