Having picked up ex-Deprecated frontman AJ Magana, I was
looking for big things from San Diego's Disgorge. With 4 solid releases
already under their rotting belts, my favorite being "Cranial Impalement",
Disgorge is a part of what seems to be a contagious Californian gore
obsession. Metal bands there seem to be focusing on the ol' blood and guts
routine with renewed fervor. "Consume The Forsaken" is no exception to this
rule, though Disgorge keep the secular tinge which they have always had.
Seeing as former vocalist Matti Way had a superior gurgle, Magana had his work
cut out for him. He never saw a lot of that style in his Deprecated days, but
he delivers a pretty decent toilet-bowl draining edge to his spewings on cuts
like "Dissecting Thee Apostles". Musically, Disgorge are definitely not
recommended to fans of the more melodic and/or progressive styles of metal, as
they pretty much stick to down-tuned chunking and muted 16th note chromatics.
Drummer Ricky Myers showcases a few cool off beat cymbal shots on "Demise of
the Trinity" to go along with Magana's patterns, but basically blasts his
way through this entire album. Disgorge mixes it up a little bit on "Denied
Existence" with a little stop/start mayhem and structural experimentation,
yet don't really stray from that gangrenous path for which they were
seemingly born. If you want it fast and sick, Disgorge is a safe bet for your
money. Apparently, AJ Magana is already out of the band, with Brodequin's
belcher Jamie Bailey taking over his spot, so don't expect anything less the
next time around.
