REVIEW: Disiplin - Anti-Life Moonfog Productions, 2005
8.5/10
Disiplin - Anti-Life - cover art Disiplin, the new Norwegian extreme metal band led by scene veteran General K. (now using the monicker Drakul 218), was hailed by the well-known UK mag Metal Hammer as the orchestra "to look out for in 2004". Their debut album was well received worldwide but with "Anti-Life" being released it becomes evident that they are not a one album wonder. By picking an album title filled with such joy and positive energy you could not possibly go wrong, right?

First of all it must be emphasized that this is a very well produced album thanks to the collaboration with the Akkerhaugen Studios in Telemark (recording) and Studio Fredman in Gothenburg (mixing). It provides "Anti-Life" with a very mighty sound and a powerful punch which suits their mix of black and thrash metal very well indeed.

Disiplin have chosen a similar path as fellow Norwegians Carpathian Forest although they come off as a tighter and more intense band with less will to experiment. There are also similarities to both Khold and, especially when it comes to the vocals, Satyricon. The song writing is also more complex and diverse, making "Anti-Life" a dynamic album that doesn't let go of the listener's attention without putting up a good fight.

Black and thrash metal are two genres, or subgenres if you will, that are well miscible with each other, black metal providing a raw and primitive edge as well as an evil atmosphere while thrash metal adds energy and groove to the final product. The equation is simple but many have tried to solve it before with a far less satisfactory result than Disiplin.

If you adore bands like Emperor, Carpathian Forest, Satyricon and Destruction there is a good chance that "Anti-Life" will be your favorite album anno 2005. This little piece of plastic will swallow all light and rape your ears until they bleed and afterwards only feel good about it.
