REVIEW: Dismal Euphony - Python Zero Nuclear Blast, 2001
8/10
Dismal Euphony - Python Zero - cover art Interesting, entertaining, creative, symphonic. Those are the words describing pretty well my feelings regarding the Avant-garde bands I've heard so far. Dismal Euphony replaces the last element with psychedelic. This being done by the main songwriter Kris Vold with its electronics contribution besides his drums and guitars duities. Even in the female vocals can you find similarities with that hippie bands "The Jefferson Airplane" from the sixties, with its echoing sound effect and clarity. Ok, ask your father if he's got an old dusty vinyl from them. Another thing that sets them apart from my favorites Peccatum, Arcturus or Virgin Black is their less refined sound mostly due to the non present classical instruments and more grinding electric guitar parts. Am I getting more attention from the heavier metallist? Good, because you might prefer this type of creativeness. The tittle track and "Plasma Pool" are surely for people who likes it more in the face and extreme. I would also recommend "Critical Mass" and "Zentinel" that formed with "Python Zero" the heaviest trilogy beginning this recording. But beware because this album is weird though! Even the booklet with its strange pictures and lyrics such as "Where blood is wine, Pleasures are mine, Freedom takes me high, Insomnia sails the sigh". My favorite section started with "Magma", the mistress of my threesome wonder making "Birth Reverse" a cult follower and "Needle" the spaced out slave of this orgiac mixture of sonic textures... This segment represents the most inspired Avant-gardiste trio of the album and stands out as being quite an interesting and entertaining passage. And how's all of this ending? I'm not gonna tell you! You think I'm a weirdo? Wait until you hear Python Zero.
