REVIEW: Dismember - Death Metal Nuclear Blast, 1997
8.5/10
Dismember - Death Metal - cover art Surely you've heard of this album! It's an exciting, powerful and very well written record by one of the leading metal acts of "steel" times. Not the most extreme aggression but well worth listening to nevertheless. Guitars sound very nice all through and you're likely to find the same kind of mastery from the very beginning right until the end. Kind of an old school sound is what best describes Dismember, with a little bit of their own also mixed in. Judging from the title you'd think that this record doesn't actually contain a message, and doesn't really have any other goals than to rock. Just death metal, and nothing more. Thankfully, that's not the case. There's a lil' bit of attitude in those lyrics. And a very clear statement - the title somehow gets an actual meaning once you find out that this entire thing is about war. It's even better than you would've thought. Worst song on the album, I would say, is "Trendkiller", wich somehow didn't manage to touch me in any way and that's not just because of it's unoriginality, but it kinda lacks power too. "When Hate Killed The Light" is a nice little song, "Silent Are The Watchers" and also "Ceremonial Comedy" have a lot to offer. My fav track however is "Let The Napalm Rain" - very good ideas on there and it is also very exciting - plus it contains a "Black Sabbath" riff hidden very well underneath all that rumbling distortion - - it sounds like the song would actually be a "response" to the early Sabbath protestations against war. Who knows. All the other songs sound pretty good, that's basically why I marked the album so high in the first place. Last track starts off with a cello playing and after that other instruments also come in one at a time. The entire feel of the "Epilogue" is a lot like defeat after a bloody battle. Guess that's what they've been trying to tell me all this time. Heh. Cool.
