REVIEW: Dismember - Where Ironcrosses Grow Karmageddon Media, 2004
9/10
Dismember - Where Ironcrosses Grow - cover art "Hate Campaign" seemed like the swansong that would end the life of Dismember but now the Swedish death metal veterans return with their new album "Where Ironcrosses Grow". After having parted ways with their long-time partner Nuclear Blast they have now signed with the Dutch Karmageddon Media (ex-Hammerheart Records) which could mean a step down when it comes to sales but also a better working label to band relationship and a fresh new start. There are only a handful of bands who have survived from the late 80s / early 90s Stockholm death metal scene but what is left is the elite. Dismember have never aspired to change their sound in any drastic way but you can always be sure of one thing when getting your hands on an album from the band: it will be made up of nothing but high quality death metal in the old vein. Nothing fancy, just raw, headbashing, bonecrushing music that will only leave you with a trace of blood. I was a bit worried that we had seen the best of Dismember but "Where Ironcrosses Grow" prove only one thing: these guys will never give up easily and they are now back to reclaim their seat in the leading board of Swedish death metal which was so rightfully their's. This is for sure some of the best material the band has ever produced. One thing that I found a bit funny was the Iron Maiden riffing in "Tragedy Of The Faithful" but it fit in very well in the song. Dismember have been around for 15 years plus and they show no sign of aging.
