Dissection only managed to release two full-length studio albums before band leader Jon Nödtveidt was sentenced for murder but these two albums are two of the most important extreme metal releases from the 90s. Mixing sheer brutality with exquisite melodies, complex song structures and haunting melodies they established a trademark sound of their own which has inspired many bands and musicians since then. Few have managed to recreate the unique atmosphere though. Following up a debut album like "Somberlain" is not the easiest task a band can face but "Storm Of The Light's Bane" is no doubt a worthy antecessor. This album summarizes everything that Dissection is about and it is the more diverse of the two releases, opening a wide array of extreme musical components. The opening track is a well composed instrumental intro which leads the way on to the kingdom of darkness as we enter the powerful "Night's Blood" and "Unhallowed" which is the most intense track on the album in my opinion. The next track "Where Dead Angels Lie" is probably the most accessible and melodic Dissection song ever and also one of my favorites, resulting in an EP release the following year. In "Retribution - Storm Of The Light's Bane" the band shows yet another side of themselves by incorporating some more traditional metal riffs. Closing the album there is another instrumental but this time it is a nice but rather short piano outro composed by Alexandra Balogh who also helped out Ophthalamia on their first two albums. She was also about to release a full instrumental album on Necropolis Records under the name Rhiannon but that never materialized for some reason. "Storm Of The Light's Bane" is a close to perfect album that will appeal to all fans of melodic black / death metal. It is an album that will grow on you so don't give up if you don't love it the first time you hear it. I am very anxious to hear if the new Dissection can continue where they left off in the 90s.
