REVIEW: Dissection - The Somberlain No Fashion Records, 1993
10/10
Dissection - The Somberlain - cover art After a couple of demos and several years of dwelling in the underground Dissection signed as one of the early bands on No Fashion Records, a label which became an important catalyst for the growth of the Swedish extreme metal scene. A debut album usually means taking the first trembling steps in your career as a band. The song writing is usually rather undeveloped and the band may have not established their identity quite yet. This was never the case with Dissection though. "The Somberlain" established this Swedish band as one of the world's leading forces in the extreme metal genre right from the very start. The wonderfully complex song structures and characteristic melodies are enhanced furthermore by the ice-cold vocals from Jon Nödtveidt, every element working close together in order to create the unique haunting Dissection atmosphere. This album also includes three acoustic pieces written and performed by John Zwetsloot. It was also dedicated to the memory of Euronymous and Mayhem. While still maintaining a perfect balance between brutal aggression and melody Dissection clearly stand out from most of the competition, not only in 1993 but still today, ten years later. Not only is it obvious that these young men were excellent hard working musicians, they were also talented song writers. There is so much going on in every song that they will never grow boring. Opening up the album we have "Black Horizons" which is in my opinion one of the best songs Dissection wrote back then. Some people may claim that it was much easier to make an impression in the early days when there were not that many bands and the genre was still quite young. They are obviously wrong as "The Somberlain" is an album which crushes almost all competition even in the year 2003. If you like melodic black / death metal you can not be without the Dissection albums and this one in particular. One of the first masterpieces from the Swedish extreme metal scene.
