"Where Dead Angels
Lie" consists of five old Dissection songs from their previous albums and
might be a bit unnecessary to buy if you already have all of their albums.
However this EP shows the different sides of Dissection with both slower
melodic tunes and raging aggressive ones and it is a nice way to get to know
the band. It is a real pity that Dissection was laid to rest with the prison
sentence for their vocalist (I´m not saying that the prison sentence was
wrong!) because this band was in fact very talented and composed some great
songs. Musically Dissection crosses over both black and death metal but their
songs are often slower and more in the doom direction and they are always
melodic. Here you can also see that Cradle of Filth was not the first band to
write a song about the blood-bathing countess Elisabeth Bathory (this one is
not written by Dissection though since it is a cover version of a song from
the Hungarian black metal band Tormentor). The EP features perhaps the best
Dissection song ever and that is the title track "Where Dead Angels Lie"
with a somber and simple yet beautiful melody. This song can be heard both in
a demo version and the Nuclear Blast album version. Strangely the demo version
sounds better, it is more real and passionate. As I´ve already said this EP
could be a good way to get to know the band but only 24 minutes of music and
four real songs (there are two versions of the title track and "Feathers
Fell" is a 51 second Japanese album bonus that can hardly be classified as a
real song) is not that much really... If you just can´t get enough of
Dissection or cd's in general then by all means go ahead and get this one too
but otherwise you could preferably buy one of their real albums. Dissection is
still one of the best Swedish bands ever and these songs are just as great as
any others.
