REVIEW: Dissenter - Contamination Crash Music Inc., 2004
6.5/10
Dissenter - Contamination - cover art Another Polish Death Metal band on the Crash Music label starting their album with a mysterious piece of ambience called "Intro" that is followed by the titular track? Yep, four coincidences aside, you got it, champ. Dissenter is just like Mutilation, but not. Not really, anyway. Dissenter play a brand of Death Metal more akin to fellow countrymen Vader. Or Hate. Or Decapitated. Or Lost Soul. Or maybe even Yattering.

This is the Death Metal punctuated by blast beats and battering drum fills. This is the Death Metal with fast, palm-muted riffing and grind-grooves. This is the Death Metal with ultra-guttural vocals. This is the Death Metal with mostly transparent bass guitar, unfortunately. But hey, this is still Death Metal, I say!

Nods to Cannibal Corpse (instead of the more usual Morbid Angel references) are present but the overall feel is necessarily owed to the masterful Immolation in both the grinding groove aesthetic and also the off key, killer lead guitar work. Nowhere is this more apparent than on “In Flames of Hate.” In fact, some of the riffing and leadwork sounds like they were borrowed from Immolation’s Failures for Gods. It should come as no surprise that one of the members sports an Immolation shirt in the band photo.

Lack of originality or real innovation notwithstanding, Contamination will sit nicely on your shelf next to your [old] Vader and Immolation records. If you have room in your blackened heart for a new album, that is. Recommended for fans of the genre in need of a holdover until Immolation puts out a new one.

Editor's comment: This album was originally released in 2003 by Empire Records.
