REVIEW: Dissimulation - Maras Ledo Takas Records, 2002
7/10
Dissimulation - Maras - cover art During the past decade there have been an intense extreme metal scene growing in the Baltic countries and some of these bands are now starting to get their names known in the rest of Europe such as Skyforger, Must Missa and Obtest to mention a few. None of these bands have made such an impression on me though as this Lithuanian black metal band called Dissimulation. Having been active since 1993 in a small province town of Lithuania called Anykšciai they have now finally been able to release a full-length album through the native label Ledo Takas Records who have been a well known force in the extreme metal underground for some time now. From track one this album blasts away with their black and thrash metal assault. They sound rather similar to what Carpathian Forest have been doing lately if you take away their slower and more atmospheric songs. Other bands that come to mind are Barathrum, Darkthrone and early Bathory. Early German thrash metal has certainly also been a major influence on Dissimulation and their debut album ends with a well executed cover version of Kreator's "Tormentor". The release of this album was somewhat delayed because Ledo Takas had made an agreement with a famous studio in Berlin for mastering but the owner of the studio gave them the cold finger because of the Hitler speech sample in the song "Genocidas". The band and label however state that neither of them are fascists nor nazis. Instead the album was mastered by Vytautas Stankus at the Ophis studio in Kaunas. Be that as it may, Dissimulation has recorded a solid debut album that should without a doubt appeal to fans of rawer old school black / thrash metal. The sound quality is much better than I would have expected thanks to the Skyforger sound engineer Gints Lundbergs at the Phoenix studio in Riga. The vocals are mostly done the usual early black style but there are also some occasional clean ones, the latter not sounding too good except for the killer song "Tamsiu Nakti, Juodu Ugni" which has more of Mithotyn viking metal vibe. All lyrics are in Lithuanian but they also come with an English translation. Several killer tracks but also a few less interesting ones inbetween make up the Dissimulation debut which is not exactly groundbreaking but still recommended. Stand-out tracks: "Šauksmas Lapkricio Miglose", "Maras", "Tamsiu Nakti, Juodu Ugni", "Tormentor".
