Distant Sun is a very young band from Toronto, Canada, that
formed in mid-2001. The band consists of only two people: Kris Leeson takes
care of most music compositions and instruments while Michael Mas handles
vocals and lyrics. Michael Mas might be known to some of you through his work
in opera and musical theatres among other things. Even though they have only
been active for a year or so they have managed to write enough material for a
full-length cd and sign with the independent label Hexagon Records which is an
achievement by itself alone. You can easily tell that the duo has a vivid
interest for modern electronic music because that is what we are offered on
this debut album of theirs. A mix of industrial beats, trance-like rhythms and
a fair deal of driving guitars. I fancy the industrial influences the most
when it comes to the music composed by Distant Sun but the band still has some
work to do before reaching the heights most artists are aiming for. The main
problem I have with this disc is that it is not heavy enough. This kind of
music needs to be energetic and powerful if it is to sound any good, just
repeating rhythms is not enough no matter how complex they might be. You might
think of Distant Sun as Rob Zombie meets The Pet Shop Boys. The part of their
music I have a problem with is the dreamy vocal passages where The Pet Shop
Boys part takes over. I have always had a hard time liking their trance-like
vocal approach. This album is not bad at all but it never takes off for real
which is a pity.
