DivineFire is a new Swedish Christian metal act that was created in early 2004 by Jani Stefanovic (Am I Blood, Sins Of Omission) and Narnia vocalist Christian Rivel. Their Rhapsody flavoured mixture of power metal and more extreme metal in the vein of Soilwork and Testament has made their debut album "Glory Thy Name" quite a success in Japan. Christian Rivel's characterestic power metal vocals are well done but the occasional attempts at extreme vocals are more or less a complete failure in my opinion. Not only do they sound rather out of place but they are also quite weak. That aside, DivineFire has written an interesting album which sound unlike everything I have heard before even though Rhapsody is a very close comparison most of the time. The keyboard plays an important role in the song arrangements and helps give the music a bombastic and symphonic touch. The neo-classical guitar work becomes a little tiresome after a while and slightly more varied song writing would not have had a negative effect on the overall picture. The production is excellent and the instrumental skills of the band members are very impressive but it seems as if they want too much and the tree they have planted ends up branching into a hundred different directions at once to a point where it becomes difficult to grasp the whole of it. A good album but more structure and focus next time would not result in any complaints from me.
