REVIEW: Divine Souls - Embodiment Scarlet Records, 2001
8.5/10
Divine Souls - Embodiment - cover art From the ashes of the Swedish death metal band Cromlech another brand new act began its descent towards divinity and here we see the first result from this band. The competition is really tough in Sweden with hundreds of bands fighting for record contracts and Divine Souls has so far released no less than 5 demos before getting signed by the upcoming Italian label Scarlet Records. They have nevertheless had lots of live experience, playing with major bands like Tiamat, Dismember and Therion. Cromlech were more of a brutal death metal band while the music from the new incarnation Divine Souls is more technical and melodic in its nature as we are used to hear from Swedish bands like In Flames and newer acts like Soilwork and The Forsaken. The band has one more connection with Soilwork other than the musical similarities since the weird but well-done cover artwork was done by the former Soilwork keyboard player Carlos Del Olmo Holmberg. Each and every song on this debut album has a strong melodic groove that runs through it like a brook of clear water, acting as a cleansing and efficient contrast to the aggressive touch mainly made out of the grim vocal approach. The overall quality of the Swedish metal scene is astonishingly good and now we have yet another new band to look out for in the future.
