The fact that this curiously named act sounds nothing like Testament is the least of its worries, or ours. That it’s a holdover of all features of 1999 mainstream rock that made that era so completely revolting to fans of genuine rock and metal is far less excusable. Worse still is how craven and sneaky it is in trying to cover its slippery nature. Opening song “Desperately” is an acceptable if run of the mill roots-rocker in the tradition of Nickleback, and follow-up “Good Life” is slightly more authentic in its Southernness, if still a bit bland (see American Dog or Alabama Thunderpussy to see how the experts flare up). From then on, it shifts illogically to all points on the mainstream dial: Staind, Korn, 311, bad commercial industrial, you name it. If it was popular and repugnant five years ago, it’s referenced here. And it gets worse. Come track number four, “Earth Is Hell,” the hapless vocalist even raps…badly…about President Bush. To try and choose which is worse -- his flow or his understanding of socio-politics -- is a battle of attrition. And the rapping persists, continuing on into “But Me” and others. In between, the band sounds like no less than ten bands; some mentioned previously, others best left in their watery graveyard of trendiness. At the very least, one might hope for DFG (band abbreviations are so tiresome by now) to have a fixed musical style, but any five tracks on the album selected at random might sound nothing alike. This musical affront to humankind of Auschwitz-like proportions goes on and on for fifteen utterly vile tracks, including a fair but pointless cover of Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” and a second rendering of “Stand Alone” (not good enough in the first place) billed as the “rap version.” Summon the tribunal.
