Dolorian. Voidwards. A gust of dense nightspirit. A cruel elegant hymn to desolation. Towards the void we march...
Conceived like a downspiral spiral sound into an abyss of perdition where the songs are put together without blanks in between, here we have Dolorian´s latest opus, darker, heavier, deeper than ever. These guys have always demonstrated a style of their own and this time is no exception. A warning I must point out: it´s not an easy task to admire the music performed by these Finns. Some in-depth listenings are necessary to snatch every glimpse of the essence breathen into this collection of tracks. So My Dying Bride fans would probably feel disappointed with this one. Yes, this is more or less prone to be defined as doom metal, but carried further than most of the bands. Dolorian put to the extreme the feelings portrayed in the style. Psychedelic, funeral, melancholic, their music brings to the extreme every mark of obscurity represented by the human being. Instead of playing ultra-brutal low riffs, megaslow rhythms or employ plenty of nonsense synth samples, the band performs extreme music through extreme resources without pretentions nor wanna-be-the-most competitions.
Short tracks under the shape of ambiental noises connect the real songs like sinews of the rich yet sometimes simple instrumentation. Coldness is whispered in great amounts, using sound patterns carefully selected and grimly exquisite as these guys usually do. The original percussive focus bestow us splendid paces like the beginning of “The One Whose Name Has No End”, while the distorted guitar chords are wisely used with selected taste, like providing the proper morphine dose to a drug addict. So when the roaring of the six strings deliver those chilling notes, the listener experienced in gloomy passages is able to see everything and nothing at the same time. Nevertheless we have that splendid classic guitar passage in “The Flow of Seething Visions” to bring to the fore the contrast with the crunchy chords, so it´s pretty clear Dolorian are great musicians and creators above all things. The way guitars conduct the sinister ensemble through different musical colours and tones is excellent and is probably the most significant trademark of Dolorian. I just can utter eulogies to this opus, frankly. The load of mystery surrounding these band and their visions is nothing but remarkable and highly recommended. From the evocative song titles to the music itself, “Voidwards” is a unique sonic journey through the transcendental state of mind of the creators. Mystically awesome.
