REVIEW: Dominion Caligula - A New Era Rises No Fashion Records, 2000
8.5/10
Dominion Caligula - A New Era Rises - cover art Dominion Caligula is a side-project from two of the members of the Swedish black metal band Dark Funeral, probably not unknown to most of you by now. To all of you who hate black metal I can tell that Dominion Caligula is not regular black metal. The grim vocals and guitar sound is still there at some points but the riffing and drums are more death metal like making this album sound very unique and full of great melodic music from some of the most talented musicians Sweden has to offer. If you know Dark Funeral from before you will probably be a little surprised when you hear the masterpiece "Drink The Royal Seed" with strong industrial influences, great keyboards and beautiful female vocals mixed with the traditional black metal sound. Distinct guitar riffing and keyboards play important roles on this album, making it diverse and interesting all the way through. Dominion Caligula is definitely a band to count with and one of the most innovative and exciting projects in Swedish metal today. I´m already hoping for a follow-up to this their first release. The keyboards on the album was played by Martin Modig. It was recorded at Abyss Studio2 during Nov 1999, engineered by Tommy Tägtgren, mixed by Tommy Tägtgren and Larsa and mastered at Cutting Room by Peter In De Betou. The cover art was done by Larsa.
