What do you get if you mix the
doom metal of Candlemass with classic Black Sabbath and then add the epic
feeling of Bathory? I actually don't have a clue but you will come close to
the sound of DoomSword, an Italian band that formed in 1997 in the city of
Gallarate. They released their self-titled debut album in 1999 through
Underground Symphony which was very well received by the metal media all over
the world. Now they have dedicated three years to the making of their second
album which will certainly not disappoint those of you who loved their first
effort. This album does very little to hide the band's influences from viking
era Bathory ("Hammerheart", "Twilight Of The Gods") but it is still very
good and consisting of interesting music that has been crafted with care. I
can't decide on whether I like the vocals or not since they sound like a mix
between Messiah Marcolin and Quorthon. Some of you will probably love them,
others will surely loathe them but they are powerful and suitable for a band
who want to create a majestic epic atmosphere the way DoomSword have managed
to do once again. Lyrically and artwise they seem to be very interested in
showing their love for ancient history and the wonderful days of yore. It
seems strange that DoomSword should need to focus on vikings and warriors of
the north though since the Italian country has a very rich history of their
own. A good solid release that should appeal to fans of Candlemass, Warlord
and Bathory. Stand-out tracks: "Shores Of Vinland", "The Early Days Of Finn
MacCool" (one of the best songs I've heard this
year).
