Black Metal has become a milk-cow! There are numerous bands that just try to grab a piece while it last through unashamed copying or poor standard. But fortunately there are also some true spirited people in the scene who place artistic and personal development above financial or other motives. One of those, so-called, true bands is Dornenreich, yet another amazing spring from the Austrian scene. Apparently the Scandinavian dominance has come to an end, for there is a lot of talent in this small European country.
“Her Von Welken Nächten” (a segment of “Was zieht her von welken Nächten”, translated “what is gathering here from wither nights” ) is already the third album from this odd trio. The first thing that you notice, and what makes Dornenreich stand out from other bands, is the fact that they sing in German. All the lyrics are poetical works, and the German language gives it an extra dimension: a more dramatic, dark and haunting feeling engulfs you.
Haunting is actualy a very good way to describe Dornenreich. Music, vocals, arrangements and lyrics all contribute to this overwhelming feeling.
Musically we get a mix of black-metal with synth, violin and cello, some acoustic parts and also some reciting. There is enough variation and the compositions of the songs are rather unusual. You could draw some comparisions with Morgul or Abigor. Solefald is also a name that pops up in my head, not really musically, but more because of the concept and approach.
There is also a lot of variation in the singing: the vocals from Valñes and Eviga range from tortured whispers up to shrieks of horror. The lyrical concept is about how humankind is perceiving and recognising themselves amongst an dreamlike, timeless conception and occasionally threatening “nightly forest” scenario (the “welke Nacht”), wich gives humankind the backdrop from which it cannot escape, and, at the end, is worth fighting for ..... this being an statement from the band itself.
In the finest “Prophecy Productions” tradition, you will get this CD in a very nice digipack with an extensive booklet containing many pictures, all the lyrics and a full explanation (in German) of the lyrical concept. What more do you need?
This album is definitely worthy of your attention.
