REVIEW: Dornenreich - In Luft Geritzt Prophecy Productions, 2008
8/10
Dornenreich - In Luft Geritzt - cover art Dornenreich stands for words - big words, poetic words. And mastermind Eviga (Jochen Stock) won't dissapoint his listeners concerning this point. Though the lyrics seem to be a little reduced on In Luft Geritzt, the new album of the Austrian band. But already the title (in English: "Scored into the Air") gives us a taste of Eviga's versatile wordplay.

As expected the new album isn't the return to their black metal roots. No, it seems like Eviga feels comfortable with another acoustic album in the year of 2008. The instruments used on In Luft Geritzt are acoustic guitars, voice, bells and violin, played by Evigas new companion Inve (Thomas Riesner). The violinist joined Eviga after he split up with his former band member Valnes (Thomas Stock) and on In Luft Geritzt he shows why he's a professional musician. His playing supports the aggression and intensity Eviga develops on this new album.

It's needless to compare Dornenreich with other groups, even hard just to find a genre which really fits. Acoustic rock? Folk rock? Ambient rock? Gothic rock? A little bit of all, but whether you like it or not - Dornenreich's got its very own style.

In some parts In Luft Geritzt delivers us the perfect kind of sound to spend the romantic hours of tepid evenings with our sweetheart. The guitars play soft chords and the violin beautiful and sometimes even sanguine melodies. But this is only one aspect of the album. The other side is a dark one, an angry one. Eviga seems to remember the old black metal days when he strums the strings of the acoustic guitars. And also his voice comes not only whispering, but fizzling and sometimes screaming. That's the aspect of the album which rather invites one to spend hours without the sweetheart with this music - Lonely, dark evening hours, with a candle shining in front of you.

The very special aspect of the album is the sensibility which expresses very well in the intensity and dynamic. The many dynamic changes make the listening experience intense. The overall impression - an album for dreamers! An invitation to get abducted into another world.
