REVIEW: Doro - Calling The Wild Steamhammer Records, 2000
8/10
Doro - Calling The Wild - cover art Doro still has a lot of that German accent in her voice that I remember from her early days in Warlock. Warlock's "Triumph & Agony" was actually one of the first real metal albums I bought and perhaps it's because of this that I have always been a fan of her powerful voice. On that album there was a great ballad called "Für Immer" (Forever in German) but it is with tears in my eyes that I have to admit that nowadays her ballads unfortunately sound like any other radio ballad which means extremely boring. At least there is some solace to be found in her beautiful voice. Several songs on this new album are really good like the three first ones but it seems like Doro has been absorbed by the commercial hard rock scene of America with the likes of Guns 'n Roses, Megadeth, Alice Cooper and countless others who all make very simple, straight-forward music with occasional great songs. It is a proven fact that people get older as well and then slower songs come more natural than faster and heavier ones. Perhaps I'll appreciate this album more in five or ten years. TV metal is a good phrase to use when describing the music on this album.
