REVIEW: Doro - Warrior Soul AFM Records, 2006
7/10
Doro - Warrior Soul - cover art I know quite a few young men in their 20s who would do just about anything short of murder in order to be the husband of Doro Pesch. If you're a beautiful woman in the music business it is virtually impossible not to become a sex symbol to the male portion of the genre fans. Luckily Doro has had an equally beautiful voice to back up her looks and the characteristic German accent has made her stand out from most other successful women in the hard rock business. First rising to fame with her band Warlock in the 80s she outgrew her band mates, or realized that her potentials were higher, and kickstarted her solo career with the "Hard Times" EP in 1989. Even though I still love her voice I will always enjoy her early work with Warlock most and it was a wonderful experience for me to witness her perform the old classics at the Wacken Open Air festival in 2004. It's hard to say anything bad about her latest effort "Warrior Soul". As usual she collaborates with professional rock musicians and although no songs stand out from the rest musically speaking, Doro's voice lifts them higher than any other vocalist could have done. The producer apparently agreed with me as her vocals have been placed veeeeery high in the mix which in my opinion was a good idea. "Warrior Soul" is a musically questionable collection of mellow to semi-heavy hard rock ballads but, after all, it is Doro and no-one else.
