Dragonland is a Swedish band who has gained
some attention lately because of the fact that their keyboard player Elias
Holmlid has done soem work for bands like King Diamond, Falconer and Ironware.
His skills will become evident to you from the very start of this album since
it opens up with a instrumental intro that is simply beautiful. "Holy War"
is the band's second album but the band members are no real newcomers on the
metal scene. They have previously been seen in other Swedish acts like
Prophanity, Sacrilege, Nightshade and Taetre. The music of Dragonland is
rather far from these bands because this is purely modern power metal. The
common thread that binds all these bands together though is a sense of melody
which is something that Swedish bands have always been famous for. The band
members have taken advantage of their connections in the metal scene for this
album. The cover art was done by Chrille Andersson from Supreme Majesty and
Gus G. (Mystic Prophecy, Firewind, Dream Evil) contributes a guitar solo. The
lyrics are extremely boring if you are not into dwarves and elves but luckily
that's not everything. After having said this it feels a bit stupid to say
that this album contains one of the best power metal songs of 2002 namely
"Through Elven Woods And Dwarven Mines". Go Tolkien and the brave little
hobbits... Unfortunately most other songs follow the good old concept of
"play as fast as you can and everything will work out for the best". There
are two things that make Dragonland stand out though - the vocalist Jonas
Heidgert and the keyboards from Holmlid, both of whom are amazing when
everything clicks. Dragonland is a band where a lot of talent resides but the
song writing is still a little
uneven.
