Drastique have been around since the
mid 90's as a solo project formed by the Italian resident Chris Buchman but
until recently they were known under the alternative spelling Drastic. I
don't know if there is any major change in their music following the name
changed since I have never heard this band before but I really like what I was
offered from this release. Beyond Productions is one of several fine Italian
labels including names such as Avantgarde Music, Code666 and Scarlet Records.
The most impressive band on the label is in my opinion the Russian black /
folk metallers of Satarial but Drastique is also a quality act that is
something out of the ordinary. It is very hard to put their music into an
existing category or genre if you will because this is not something that you
are used to hearing. There are influences from black metal, gothic metal,
death metal and even some industrial tendencies. I would say that the black
and gothic influences are the strongest though. Now that Chris has been joined
by Mahavira (ex-Ensoph) and the female vocalist Fay, Drastique is stronger
than ever before. There are plenty of keyboards and the overall sound gives
the album a kind of romantic atmosphere which is probably also their ambition.
Bands that come to mind as comparisons are Dismal Euphony, Cradle Of Filth and
Theatre Of Tragedy. If you enjoy atmospheric black / gothic metal then I would
recommend you to give this Italian act a chance. Perhaps the cover of
Sandra's old radio hit "Maria Magdalena" isn't the best I've heard but
otherwise I really enjoyed this album. Lyrical inspiration from geniouses such
as Dante Alighieri, William Blake, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Percy Bysshe
Shelley doesn't really make me like the album any less. In the end, aren't
we all following the religion of pleasure and sin? Stand-out tracks:
"Immortal Beloved".
