Dream Or
Nightmare is a fairly new project founded by guitarist Joe Sims who is
previously known from bands like Axemaster, The Awakening and Reign. This is
the first demo recording from the band and I must admit that they have found a
very unique sound that I haven't really heard from any band before. They have
managed to mix a wide range of influences - nu-metal, clean and distorted
vocals, progressive metal and a more traditional hard rock sound. I am not
overly impressed with the result of this demo cd but I'm not quite sure if
I'm fooled by the demo sound quality or not. The guitar sound is a little
annoying but this could perhaps be repaired with a proper production in the
future. The first two tracks are quite interesting but after that it feels
like you've heard the songs already. What I like most about Dream Or
Nightmare is the technical groovy riffing and I think they should focus more
on the progressive influences in the future. Sometimes the music is a little
too chaotic for my taste but Dream Or Nightmare may very well become a band
that I could love in a few years time from now. This disc deserves a higher
rating but even though it's a demo I have to consider the sound quality.
Definitely one of the best demos of the
year.
