REVIEW: Dream Theater - Images and Words Atlantic Records, 1992
7.5/10
Dream Theater - Images and Words - cover art The Americans of Dream Theater are some of the most talented musicians in the metal world and this is one of the band's best albums so far. It is full of their usual highly technical and very melodic progressive metal with very good, classic heavy metal vocals by James LaBrie. Some of the best guitar riffs of all time can be heard on this album. The only thing that annoys me a little with this band is that their songs sometimes get really slow and almost without any music at all - James LaBries vocals aren't that good that you would want them alone (if you're a girl/woman you might think differently...) - they are sometimes too long and get boring for one or two minutes. But if you like rather soft progressive metal close to rock music with emotional clean male vocals this is one of the best albums you could choose to buy. The album was recorded and mixed at Bear Tracks Studio, Suffern, NY, produced by David Prater and engineered by Doug Oberkircher. Except for the band members you can also hear Jay Beckenstein play soprano sax on "Another Day", a most unusual instrument on metal albums.
