REVIEW: Dream Theater - Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence Elektra Records, 2002
7.5/10
Dream Theater - Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence - cover art A band has reached a certain status when they start to release double CD's. Twice as much Dream Theater is an orgasm for many of their fanatic fanbase, while I think for the normal listener might find it both ambigious and maybe somewhat too much. "Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence" should not surprise anyone in the style though. A total of 100 minutes of world-class progressive metal, featuring maybe the best musicians in this genre on all spots... and they show it. Guitarsolos that will make your granny move, drumming that will make most other drummers quit, and I can go on. It's a show-off in that sense, Dream Theater has always been about that. Songwise "Six Degrees..." is repeating maybe too much of what they've done on the previous 3 albums. It is of course extremely well done and professional, but also there is the feeling that they can not go on to the next level with their music. The band has the same professionality in the performance, the sound is pretty much the same, and the whole set-up is what you expect. I am sure this album is not as strong as their previous "Scenes From A Memory", although if this one had come before that album, maybe it had been, if you see what I mean. I think it is time for a band of Dream Theater's format to also try the development formula, so they don't fall back from their own repetitions. Maybe the band should just risk the danger of loosing some fans and try to loosen up a little the next time. For the general buyer though, "Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence" is certainly one of this years highlights in progressive metal. A album you can not avoid.
