REVIEW: Dreams Of Damnation - Epic Tales Of Vengeance Say It In Blood Records, 2006
7/10
Dreams Of Damnation - Epic Tales Of Vengeance - cover art Well, well, well. What have we got here, folks? Looks like Jim "Dark Angel" Durkin is back on the Thrash attack. Perhaps taking a cue from the resurrected (again [and it feels so good {again}]) Exodus, Durkin is back after what seems like an extended hiatus. Well, if you didn't know about the band's 2000 EP Let the Violence Begin, that is. The current record, Epic Tales of Vengeance, is a somewhat brief 7 songs in under 28 minutes and while it snaps necks for the most part, some of the riffing seems repetitive. Not old or dated, mind you, just perhaps a touch overused per song. Also slowing the momentum of this release is the drumming and drum production. Sometimes sounding out of place (read: fills and overall phrasing) and at others sounding like a machine, the drumming plainly detracts from the overall experience. That said Dreams of Damnation fit right between Bay Area Thrash and Arch Enemy. Loana dP Valencia (from Nuclear Blast Records' mighty PR department) supplies vocals that would make Angela Gossow blush and run for cover with a slightly Death Metal tinged voice that works well with this brand of Thrash. No D.O.D. is not the most original thing to come down the pike in years but this is well done Thrash with one of the genre's stalwarts at the helm. Put on your bullet belts, leather, denim, and spikes and get in the pit. \m/
