REVIEW: Drudkh - Blood In Our Wells Supernal Music, 2006
9/10
Drudkh - Blood In Our Wells - cover art Drudkh´s fourth full-length album is a sonic eulogy to their beliefs, ancestors and nation. This may sound a bit typical and some even could wonder about another token of fascist propaganda under the metal spectre, though that´s not a moor I will tread today. Since I can´t read the lyrics, written in their mother tongue, I´m going to put down some lines about what counts in the end, namely the music. This Ukrainian band plays a brand of excellent pagan metal, astonishingly epic and evocative. The songs are lengthy and built off calm guitar melodies, mesmerizing mid tempos and a strong romantic, meditative, nostalgic feeling painted with an effective palette of long notes. The balance between the cold sound and colour of the guitars and the emotionally crushing compositions is absolutely majestic. Drudkh manage the style thousand times better than other countless loser bands due mainly to their higher sense of taste, performing consistent songs which achieve the wished results without falling on monotonous lines. The overall focus retains a tragic, ambiental ressonance slightly devoted to Burzum in a certain way though the feeling is more solemn, pagan-like than desperate/obsessive. I can even reckon a dreamlike presence breathen along the album. Is it yearning? Is it a bitter remembrance of the past? A dirge to the materialistic present of their nation, deprived of the primeval Slavonic culture? Manifold sensations flow from the music and it´s up to each one to translate them to thoughts. “Blood In Our Wells” belongs to that category of albums which leave a trail of moods, a heartfelt ressonance in your head after the listening. Therefore you can notice this album is able to impact significantly on the listener, something utterly remarkable and rare. Spirit and will collide from time to time to craft awesome albums like this. Not everything is lost.
