REVIEW: Dusk - Mourning...Resurrect Lost Disciple Records, 2002
7.5/10
Dusk - Mourning...Resurrect - cover art The 2 recordings in 2 years put out by this now defunct band are compiled onto one 10-song slab of deathly doom metal here, along with a song they did for a compilation in 1998. While most bands classified as "doom" have sparse moments of death, Dusk was a band that had an even and enjoyable balance of the 2, and in the end remind me a lot of the band Brutality. Ron Heemstra was quite the drummer, smashing out ample off-beat snare and ride cymbal punishment. There are a couple of mid-paced blast sections in "Begotten Interlude", and plenty of double bass runs, though I found them to overpower the guitars in the mix sometimes. Steve Crane was the vocalist, and had a nice low-end growl going, as well as some effect-laced clean parts in tracks like "..Majestic Thou In Ruin". The guitars are very fuzzy yet chunky, and are provided by Steve Gross and Tim Beyer. The last song, which was Dusk's final recording and entitled "Yearning For Eternity", reminds me a lot of Hypocrisy's "The Fourth Dimension" album, with its snail-paced tonnage crushing you into the ground. Some synthesizer work adds atmosphere, along with some crystal clear nature samples. I was fairly impressed with this overall, though at times my interest waned. FAVORITE TRACKS: "Paled", "Element Of Symmetry".
