REVIEW: Dust To Dust - Sick Psyclone Records, 2003
7/10
Dust To Dust - Sick - cover art A flip of the radio dial nowadays can reveal a herd of similar sounding bands playing the same guitar chords and whining about the same things. And then there is Dust to Dust. The New York based outfit of Dust to Dust features the duo of Rob Traynor on vocals/guitars/bass/synth and Steve Tobin on drums. Just don't let the member count fool you, what this band may lack in numbers they make up for with musicianship. With their latest album Sick comes an exhibition in truly emotional hard rock that avoids any current trends or fads in any musical scene. Sick has an overall honest feeling and accessibility that lets the listener not only hear the music but feel it as well. The music itself is crisp, catchy and even three-dimensional thanks to the programming that accents every song so brilliantly. Rob Traynor truly showcases his range not only as a musician but also as a vocalist going from sing to scream and not ever missing a beat. Traynor's crunchy guitar work is also accompanied by Type O Negative guitarist Kenny Hickey who was brought in as a lead guitarist in a handful of songs bringing yet another powerful element into this album. From the start Sick never fails to impress and there is just absolutely nothing lacking on the entire album from the production to the track layout. In fact Sick is the album that offers proof that irrelevant bands like Godsmack and Linkin Park are now only in the way of Dust to Dust climbing their way to the top of the hard rock food chain.
