REVIEW: Dwelling - Humana Equilibrium Music, 2003
7.5/10
Dwelling - Humana - cover art Music made out of nothing but acoustic string instruments and vocals, does that sound like something that should be featured at Tartarean Desire? I must say that I don't really care because I choose to include this album here no matter what you think. Why? Because this album is simply too good to be ignored and it will never get the attention it deserves in mainstream media which is a shame. People just can't seem to appreciate unique and creative music. It has always been and will always be that way since most people are too lazy or ignorant to look past what they are washed over with from the radio stations, MTV and other forms of commercial advertising. Sorry about that, well, back to this album then. Dwelling is a highly unusual band from Portugal that was given birth to in 1998, back then a solo project of guitarist Nuno Roberto. In the year 2001 Equilibrium Music released their debut MCD called "Momento". Today the band consists of two guitarists, one bassist, one violinist and one female vocalist and they have now finished the work on their debut full-length album entitled "Humana", a concept album which portrays the human life cycle - the journey from the cradle to the grave, a journey inevitably without a happy ending. Contemporary influences and elements derived from jazz and traditional Portugues music come to life alongside neo-classical guitar work and ethereal female vocals. This is music which challenges the mind. It is bold, creative and dynamic. "Humana" is a refreshing release in a time when most bands either strive to sound like someone else or lack the guts to try something new. I believe that this is the first fully acoustic album ever reviewed here at Tartarean Desire but I was immediately impressed by the work from these Portuguese men and women. Definitely recommended for those of you who appreciate music outside the metal spectrum.
