REVIEW: DyNAbyte - Extreme Mental Piercing Rotten Inc. Records, 2004
8.5/10
DyNAbyte - Extreme Mental Piercing - cover art The history of the Italian band DyNAbyte starts in 1998 when three musicians decided to pursue their own goals after the split-up of a hard rock act. Among them were John (aka Killer Bob), bassist of the well-known thrash metal veterans Necrodeath, who seems to be the main driving force within the band. For me the band took off for real though in late 2001 when they replaced their original vocalist Giallo (who wanted to focus on his career with Pornoshock) with the front woman Cadaveria. I have been a huge fan of her previous work with Opera IX and her homonymous project and there is no other female vocalist who uses her voice in a similar fashion. Therefore I have been very anxious to hear what DyNAbyte would sound like but it's not until now that I have had the chance. DyNAbyte is the fusing of three words - dynamite for power, dna for human and byte for computer. You might understand by now where we are heading.

What becomes evident when listening to these songs is that John has not distanced himself completely from his past with Necrodeath. There is a decent amount of thrashy riffs baked into the pounding industrial rhythms and electronic influences that build the foundation of DyNAbyte's compositions. It adds even further power and energy to the mix and is something that make them stand out from most other bands who experiment with industrial metal. Musically DyNAbyte reminds quite a lot of Fear Factory spiced up with thrash riffs and techno rhythms. Furthermore, Cadaveria is offered much greater freedom here than she seems to have given herself with her other bands. She switches from her characteristic aggressive and well articulated growls to clean vocals, sometimes with added vocoder effects which are luckily not exaggerated. We don't want another Cher, do we?

"Extreme Mental Piercing" is a very refreshing and impressive debut that is likely to appeal to a wide array of metal fans. Whether you like Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, Fear Factory, thrash metal in general or Cadaveria's previous work I think you will be able to enjoy this album. I must mention that I had serious doubts as to whether I was going to review it or not though since they have come up with the most annoying and pointless attempts I've ever heard of in order to prevent illegal copies being made by adding a ten second tone to the songs. I did not doubt too long though because despite this naive idea the music is too good not to write about.
