REVIEW: Edera - Edera (demo) Self-financed, 2000
6/10
Edera - Edera (demo) - cover art Edera is a band out of Milan, Italy, who are very difficult to define musically. They themselves call it art rock and as they also mention they owe a lot of their inspiration to the pseudo-metal music played by Queen in the 70's. What stands out in most of the songs is the often beautiful piano / keyboards and the gothically wailing vocals from Valerio Valentini. Piano is one of the most beautiful instruments on earth if done right and this Edera prove to us on several occasions. In between these occasions the music unfortunately becomes a little dull and insipid which is mostly a result of the guitars being almost nothing but background music with somewhat chaotic keyboard melodies doing most of the job of pushing the songs forward. To improve I think Edera should develop their music in one of these two directions: either they could focus on having mostly keyboard melodies but then these have to be a bit more powerful and creative then they are now or they could make their guitarwork more protruding and more melodic. They also have a third possibility of going into a more heavy direction but this I don't think that was the intention with the Edera project. Apart from the nice piano melodies this album does unfortunately not impress me that much. I might be in a bad period at the moment or this kind of emotional gothic rock-metal is just not meant for me...
