Edge Of Sanity is one of the main
bands of Dan Swanö who is one of the most important individuals in the
history of modern Swedish metal. Nowadays he has more or less retired to work
in a music store but he will forever be remembered by metal fans all over the
world for the work he did with Edge Of Sanity and plenty of other bands, both
as a musician, a song writer and a producer. "Purgatory Afterglow" is
definitely one of the better death metal albums from the 90's and since this
band is from my neighbourhood their music is very close to my heart. There are
two main schools when it comes to death metal - first the Florida / Stockholm
sound which is generally more brutal and technical and then there is the
melodic death metal sound from the west coast of Sweden. Together with bands
like Opeth and Cynic, Edge Of Sanity doesn't really fit into any of these two
categories. Instead Edge Of Sanity is more progressive and is in that aspect
somewhat similar to Opeth even if they both have their own unique
personalities. This album shows a wide range of elements - everything from
brutal death growls to atmospheric clean vocals, accompanied by aggressive and
technical playing, beautiful melodies and dynamic drumming. All of this is
performed by five skilled musicians who had been playing together for several
years without any line-up changes. This is a wonderful album from a band that
you should know of already. Stand-out tracks: "Blood-Colored", "Silent",
"Black Tears" and "Velvet Dreams" although all of them are
great.
