Germany’s Edguy have been churning out solid power metal albums for almost a decade now. The band plays a brand of power metal that veers heavily towards the melodic side and that harkens back to sound of the pop metal bands that dominated music in the 80s. Their latest offering, Rocket Ride, shares a lot with the rest of the band’s discography. The typical elements are all present, from the melodic choruses to the hilarious lyrical themes. To their credit, the band is not overly serious, as titles like “Fucking with Fire” and “Trinidad” should indicate. The CD runs a little long at one hour, but the tracks are varied enough to hold the listeners interest. There are some longer “epics,” some uptempo rockers and even a ballad or two. By virtue of its immediately catchy bombastic chorus the clear standout track would have to be the first single “Superheroes.” Electronic effects on songs like “Matrix” also help to keep things interesting. In all, I can’t say that I was too blown away with Rocket Ride, as the music really does not offer up any new ideas or challenge the listener. However, the album is still a solid hour of enjoyable melodic metal that should appeal to fans of melodic metal. At the very least the lyrical content serves as a welcome respite from the legions of power metal bands that sing solely about dragons.
