Viking metal how it was meant to be. With their latest release "Blot", Einjerer show us that they belong to the top bands of this genre. Coming from Norway, the land of black metal, they bring up a rather new, very original style with atmospheric, epic and folkish elements. Due to some lineup changes it took almost three years since the release of "Norwegian Native Art". Ragnar Vikse left the band and guitarist Frode Glesnes now took over the vocals, which sound much more aggressive and mean on their fourth album than ever before. Now signed to Tabu Recordings they did indeed a very impressive work on this album. Starting off with "Einherjermarsjen", a classical epic song which could perfectly fit into a movie soundtrack or, as presented here, as a great opener to this album. Already here you can hear those folkish, atmospheric elements mentioned above. The next song "Ironbound" shows the typical Einnherjer-sound how we like it. Filled with folkish melodies, keyboards in the background and of course Frode's growling vocals mixed with stomping drums. On songs like "Dead Knight's Rite" or "Beserkergang" you can hear more typical guitar riffs and rhythms, but nevertheless the most impressive guitar work is presented on "Venomtongue". Something new brings the song "Ingen Grid", which could almost be called a ballad due to slow and very melodic instrumental passages. This song includes both acoustic and electric guitars, epic choirs and it's less aggressive than the other songs. Judging to what Einherjer presented
here, there is no doubt that Thyrfing, which is currently the strongest viking metal band out there, have got new opponents to reckon with.
