REVIEW: Einherjer - Norwegian Native Art Native North Records, 2000
8.5/10
Einherjer - Norwegian Native Art - cover art Soon after Einherjer began to take their first trembling steps into the international metal scene back in 1993 they became one of the pioneers of a brand new form of metal that became known as "viking metal". Deeply rooted in Norwegian black metal ground they incorporated new musical elements, developing their sound in a more epic and atmospheric direction and started to write lyrics about the good old times when the vikings ruled the North and Christianity had not yet conquered their land. After leaving Century Media with their previous release "Odin Owns Ye All" as their final CM album they decided to handle business on their own and formed a new label called Native North Records. The label didn't last for very long since they grew tired of the business side of music but they did manage to release this album and one or two more before calling it quits. Einherjer have found a very distinct and unusual sound with unexpected tempo changes, dramatic vocals, epic soundscapes and a nicely painted atmosphere. It becomes even clearer with this release that Einherjer are one of their kind and definitely belong to the elite of the extreme music scene in Norway. The closing track "Regicide" is a slow melodic tune with both clean male and female vocals and is, believe it or not, one of the strongest songs of the album. It must be emphasized though that there are no bad songs to be found here. Stand-out tracks: "Doomfaring", "Crimson Rain".
