This is the 5th album from long-running German black metallers Eisregen and an album that has sold exceptionally well in their own country, reaching position 87 on the national album chart. Then what is so special about them, what is the winning concept behind their success story? Well, first of all the lyrics are entirely in German which naturally attracts German speaking people more than others as it feels close to your heart. It would be wrong to simply label Eisregen as a black metal band because there is much more to their music. The song writing is straight-forward and simple, yet memorable and catchy and more than once wander off into Barathrum territory but with a gothic touch and a few hints of folk that also reminds of the atmosphere that Agathodaimon has accomplished on their latest releases. Eisregen is an extreme band but they are unusually catchy which is probably the main reason why they have been able to reach as many people as they have.
The frontman Michael "Blutkehle" Roth also plays an important role in the band as his blackened grunts are well articulated, reminding quite a bit of Ancient Rites but with a rougher edge. The songs are in general melodic and mid-paced with few exceptions in any direction. Eisregen have intelligently carved their own niche where they are the leaders while others follow but sometimes the concept hinders development as they easily get stuck in the same patterns. Lyrics and vocals can be put on the positive list while the music is slightly too simple to win me over completely. An enjoyable album though that unfortunately fades step by step towards the end.
