The first thing that comes to my mind while listening to Ektomorf’s new release “Instinct” is: ok here’s the Hungarian response to Soulfly. But I want to be objective and go through the whole 12 songs so my review won’t be biased on the first impression I got of a Soulfly copycat here. Just until track number 4, “Burn”, I sense something a little different that doesn’t make them just a very good copy of the aforementioned band, then they hit you with “The Holy Noise,” a NYHC influence kicks in, very subtle but its there, still I can’t get Soulfly and Sepultura out of my head,; “Fuck You All” is next, the Hard Core element keep present, turning into a very slow paced song in the end that would set the stage for “United Nations” in which the same Soulfly formula keeps present. “Land Of Pain” displays a piece of instrumental gipsy elements and serves as an introduction to “I Break You”, “You Got What You Give”, Until The End” and “I Will”. Overall, the album keeps going back and forth between strong Hard Core and “Cavalera” influences, displaying just a few elements out of those which makes the album feel very monotonous and predictable, don’t get me wrong, the album is good, the music is raw and heavy, the production is excellent and the anger is there, of all the bands out there that had chosen the “Cavalera” way of playing, I think Ektomorf are the best, and comparing “Instinct” to their previous releases you can tell they are in the right way of developing a sound more of their own, fed by musical elements of their own environment, but if they want a more notorious place in the metal scene I think they have to work harder on getting out of the Soulfly cliché to focus more on developing a personality of their own for their sound.
