This is a really tough album to review. On the first hand, Elend is a band of their own. Nothing to do with metal, despite the dark side of the music could be related to metal bands. On the second hand, such a unique ambient act is capable to do anything beyond imagination. “Sunwar The Dead” is different, quite different than its predecessors. In fact it takes several listens to make yourself a reliable picture of what this is all about; at first I simply disliked this record, honestly. Further tries opened my eyes though the course wasn´t easy at all. The ambiences of some songs are really harmful, gloomy and pernicious to the ear. I was quite shocked Elend had made such a strange and creepy album, but that´s the truth. Obviously this is not for the ones that enjoyed releases as “Weeping Nights”; “Sunwar The Dead” is miles away. Not a orchestra and the classic alternance between the men and the girl singing; not successive changes from dark to light.
This album is very compact and the complexity of music is rather high. Layers of synths creating dissonances that shake your soul and mood adorn the songs, and build an atmosphere quite effective and chilling. At times it is disturbing, even frightening. Elend haven´t abandoned in this album the evocative fragments, delicate sounds which are their trademark. I should add the Dead Can Dance influence is somehow weaker in this album. Still the voices are strongly marked by Brendan Perry, but the music as a whole is kind of distant from that band. The use of samples is far richer than before, and sometimes they are the key element when trying to dissect the eerie sound of those passages. The classical education of Elend members is evident, although represented in composers that meant a renewal in schemes, breaking the established patterns to drive the orchestra sound. This duo still manage to deliver beauty made music, but this time other atmospheres can be experienced apart from the traditional classical parts. Brave, varied, perhaps unpleasant, but endowed with professional arrangements that make this a great ambient album. A great album that is not for everyone, by the way...
