The French symphonic metallers Ellipsis are lucky to have maintained most of their line-up as 3/4 of the original members are still with the band. Such a stable foundation has probably had a lot to do with the band finding their own sound, somewhere close to the borderline between progressive rock and symphonic metal. Despite having had so long to work on their own material it was not until last year (2003) that they released their debut album "Comastory" for Adipocere Records. It is very hard to grip what Ellipsis are trying to achieve with their music as it is rather unconventional and experimental. You can definitely understand that Faith No More, Dream Theater and Waltari has had something to do with their development into the complete musical entity they have become today. There is very little structure to the songs themselves and everything comes off as rather bizarre and chaotic but in a positive way. Hidden somewhere deep in this musical maze there is however a red line and I am confident that Ellipsis know perfectly well what they are doing. "From Beyond Thematics" does not offer easy listening but it is both psychotic and melodic at the same time. Definitely not for everyone but if you are into extreme, experimental and progressive metal than give them a chance. If there were more of real songs I would probably have appreciated this album more than I did now.
