REVIEW: Elusive - Locked Doors, Drinks And Funerals Pandaimonium Records, 2007
7.5/10
Elusive - Locked Doors, Drinks And Funerals - cover art This release with the long and bizarre title does not include 100% new songs since some were written during the recording, while some others had been written in the past. And the reason for releasing some old stuff was absolutely justified since many fans wanted to acquire them while they were already being played live.

The album begins a bit "numb" with "Destination Zero," which is a mediocre song although surrounded by a veil of mystery. Judging by its name, it should have been included in the debut album. The faster but rather flat "Faith" does not justify our faith concerning the indisputable abilities of the band, which luckily happens with the vivid and inspired "Run Away" and "In Her Garden." Although they have the stigma of typical Elusive songs, at the same time they sound a bit "Sister-ical."

There is an imaginary "Thin Line" to characterise this song from boring (or minimum indifferent) to extremely interesting. At a first hearing one could claim the former due to its duration (8 minutes) and the dominance of slow and mid tempo. However, a careful listener would discover many interesting things within it, such as the change of tempos and thereby of feelings, especially at the points of escalation. A small masterpiece of this release. Maybe this song fits better to the Western "Nevada" photos of the booklet. At some points Jan sounds like Jim Morrison. A thin line between "The Doors" and "Gothic Rock."

Nevertheless, the best song of the album is "So Far Away." A brilliant, brisk and inspired song that would fit in "The Great Silence" atmosphere. "Another Day" is another good rhythmical song based mainly on the keyboard theme. "The Ghost Of You" is slow and mild, a sort of "Marillion" style ballad; not of my style actually, but I acknowledge that it is a quality song.

Things seem to go on the familiar Elusive "Road", which sounds like an extension of the "End Of The Trail," slightly influenced by Billy Idol. The fast and exciting "Dream On Sister" resembles at some points "Coming Home" from "Destination Zero" and can easily bring a Gothic Rocker to high spirits. The album ends with the slow "Into Your Arms."

The only drawback of this release is that some ideas are repeated and some songs lower the average positive image. Personally I think Elusive lose at slow and long-lasting songs. However the whole release is on average at high standards and if the so-called "second class" songs (namely the ones that were not initially planned to be included in the previous releases) are of such high level, let alone what's going on with the "first class" ones.
