After 4 years of discographic silence the Norwegian Gothic Rock cowboys Elusive shoot again. This release is not as aggressive as their debut “Destination Zero”, which literally left the Gothic Rock society speechless. However it is also of a high quality.
“The Great Silence” contains a very strong Mission, Sister of Mercy and some Billy Idol flavour with many personal elements of course, which give their own special sound. By first sight Elusive have adapted the Fields of the Nephilim Western movies look-alike image. I don’t know if the mountain presented on the cover is in Norway or in the US but definitely predisposes the listener for Western influences not only aesthetically but also musically (“Coming Home”, “Lost In The Rain”, “Ride”).
The songs are based on the solid guitar sound of the two guitarists Kristian Gundersen and Tommy Olsson, who do a really nice job, by shooting with lethal gothic rock riffs. The passionate vocals of Jan Kenneth Barkved, who simply doesn’t sing rendering the songs, give his personal colourful stigma. A first superficial judgement could be that they simply play on well-known musical patterns, or sound like the Sisters mainly because they have pre-recorded bass and drum machine samples. However the main advantage of the album is that the songs are “catchy” (positively speaking, because this word is related many times to commercial sound), namely the beat stays in one’s mind; not to say addictive because usually the average gothic rock fan can’t resist by listening to them just once!
Good ideas and themes exist all over the album but I would distinguish the 6 first songs ("A side", let's say): “The Great Silence”, “End Of The Trail”, “Lost In Rain”, “Fading Rose”, “You” and “Coming Home” from the "B side", which is very dynamic. Another advantage especially at some songs is the gradual escalation of the rhythm ("You”, “Fading Rose”, “Outskirts”), which while the track goes on becomes faster and “richer” and furthermore extrapolating this reflects an escalation of feelings. In order this high quality work to be distinguished Olsson’s almost flawless production played an important role. I wish the next release to be of the same or even higher quality and not to leave their fans wait for the next 4 years.
