Ok, yes, I like metal more than anything in the world, and yes, I do like some other things out there of “world music,” music from the Andes, bagpipes, flamenco, among other things. I have even found some attempts of incorporating these sounds into rock and/or metal interesting and likeable, but I definitely haven’t been able to swallow the extreme to which folk music has been taken, probably because I have Latin American Indian blood running through my veins and therefore I find it ridiculous pretending to be a Troll, Elf, or whatever creature some of these bands and their fans pretend to be. Then I got this disc from the Swiss band Eluveitie and the first thing I noticed was some guy on the cover looking like some kind of faun or whatever weird creature taken out of Narnia, Lord Of The Rings or any of those fantasy stories that are so in fashion nowadays and I told myself: "This shit is Folk, it sucks man, but whatever let’s listen to it...." Well I did listen to it and I was surprised to find out that I loved it.
This disc has 15 tracks that to me seems like they explore several sounds from around the globe. I am able to distinguish a vast variety of instruments as well as tonal shades. This album is all-enveloping, exquisite and relaxing. Which label within any specific style or influence as it is very versatile? It fluctuates and connects perfectly from the calmness of a song like "Within The Grove," which to an extent contains the atmosphere and essence of tribal sounds from America, to move onto the dynamism of a song like "The Cauldron Of Renascence," which involves drums and an instrumentation very much into the style of bands like Ergo Sum adding guttural vocals on the background within a tribal feeling as well as very interesting Celtic sounds. Then it flows to "Nata," four minutes of chants and bagpipes with a touch of new age atmosphere that sort of reminds me of composers like Vangelis mixed with Braveheart’s soundtrack. Next you get "Omnos," a more soft rock oriented composition with some of the tribal elements mentioned before, and so they keep going, delighting and surprising along the whole album.
Although I found little or nothing in this disc that has to do with my perception of metal, it doesn’t mean that this is not a very outstanding musical piece which I am sure followers of the folk genre will give their pagan blessings, as well as those who appreciate and feel curious for eclectic music will do.
