REVIEW: Elvenking - Heathenreel AFM Records, 2001
8.5/10
Elvenking - Heathenreel - cover art Most bands who try to mix metal with folk music often fail on either of them but luckily there are some outstanding acts who pull if off like the new sensation Elvenking from Italy. Lots of beautiful melodies, flutes, passionate vocals and playful metal riffs make their debut album one of the most interesting releases of the year so far. Almost all vocals are clean although there are some growling done as well that partly should have been left out since it doesn't really fit their music very well. The Elvenking sound is fairly unique but it could perhaps be described as a mix of Rhapsody, Skyclad and Otyg. "Heathenreel" is without a doubt one of the best folk metal albums ever released but it shows a young band without the maturity of a band like Skyclad. "White Willow" has one of the best melodies I've ever heard but sometimes the songs are a little bit too chaotic and unorganized. With some more experience and one or two more albums Elvenking has the potential to become the No 1 folk metal band in the world. Now I'm just looking forward to the new Otyg album...
