I first came across this band when a friend of mine gave me a metal collection CD with songs from all kinds of European metal acts. Elvenking is a product of the Italian metal scene, which, at the moment, isn't as powerful as it should, and, we might say, could be. Folk metal never impressed me before, but these guys work wonders in these songs (or is it just me?). Violins, heavy riffing, sometimes even spiced with passages from more extreme styles is what Elvenking is all about while the base of their compositions is lots of melody. The delight of exotic melodies combined with ideas of modern metal is a memorable musical experience to most listeners, I think. "Wyrd" is the band's latest creation, and also the best one so far. Every single track on the record is beautifully orchestrated, as we might expect from musicians of this calibre. I might be talking too fast, but I don't think there will be another release this year that could impress and surprize me the way this CD surely did (I'm not saying that "Wyrd" will get my vote for best album of 2004, but it was the most pleasant surprize for me this year). Songs especially written for the sophisticated listener, but with enough energy to appeal to anyone willing to give them a chance. Highlights of the album would probably have to be "Moonchariot", "Jigsaw Puzzle" and the twelwe minutes long "A Poem For The Firmament", although I did hesitate a bit when I had to choose these three highlights, as all tracks are very good, and a pleasure to listen to. In conclusion, all of you who like progressive, European, powerful metal acts with certain hints of renaissance and folk, will love Elvenking.
