Despite the usual Luis Royo cover art this Elvira Madigan album is quite unique and unusual. I will get back to that soon. First of all you may want an introduction to who Elvira Madigan are as it is not a very well known name to most metal fans yet. It is a solo project of a Swedish guy called Marcus Hammarström who writes all music and lyrics as well as plays every instrument himself. Inspired by Swedish folklore and ancient tales his music reminds very much of Cradle Of Filth's symphonic black metal. While not exactly stepping aside from his chosen path this album certainly brings the world something fresh. It is an entire album filled with cover songs but I have never heard a metal covers album where the chosen tracks have surprised me this much. Here we can find two pieces from the best-selling Japanese Playstation RPG "Chrono Cross", a Tori Amos cover (she herself having covered a Slayer song previously apparently gave Marcus the idea), a Nordman (a well-known Swedish folk / pop musician) song, Scorpions' "Alien Nation", "At Zamarkand" from the tenth Final Fantasy game and no less than four (!) Chris deBurgh covers. The Nordman cover is absolutely awful but that unfortunate mistake aside this album is actually quite entertaining. It is very difficult to rate an album like this one. It is certainly fun to listen to these versions of the songs but when the final track fades away I do not really feel a desire to press play again.
