REVIEW: Elvira Madigan - Black Arts Black Lodge Records, 2005
8/10
Elvira Madigan - Black Arts - cover art This is the solo project of Marcus Madigan who, as far as I understood, made everything on this record, from composing and playing to recording and mastering the outcome. This is unexpected, as all seems so tight and elaborate as if a real band did it. The material is a good combination of Black Metal feeling and playing manners characteristic for Heavy, or Power Metal. The atmosphere is constantly dark, but also full of power with tempo being very dynamic, even in more atmospheric, calmer parts. What I liked very much here is that all instruments fit perfectly with each other and there’s no-one standing out. Usually that’s not the case with real bands. And, obviously Marcus had a very clear vision of what he’d like to accomplish here, since he paid attention to every detail of the record. I should mention that all the material was composed and recorded in 1999 and remixed later through the years, prior to mastering in 2004. For all lovers of melodic BM, or of good Heavy/Power Metal this would be a very interesting release.
