Elvira Madigan is the solo project of a
Swedish man called Marcus Hammarström who is without a doubt one of the
most talented individuals in the world of music today. He composes all the
music and handles all instruments himself but what is even more impressive is
that he has also written the exceptional lyrics to the songs in a very
old-fashioned and intrigueing way which clearly shows literary talents as
well. Not surprisingly he also has his own label called Northlore Records. The
wonderful cover art was once again created by the well-known Spanish fantasy
artist Luis Royo. This is the third album from Elvira Madigan and this time
the production has improved a little which helps to take the music to a new
level. Musically the only band that you may make a comparison with is Cradle
Of Filth because Elvira Madigan uses similar orchestral arrangements and a
massive amount of influences from classical can be heard all over this album.
This might be labelled as a black metal album but there is a strong gothic
atmosphere embracing each song which should help in making the music
accessible to a wider audience. Elvira Madigan has once again managed to
compose a solid, coherent album that should appeal to all fans of orchestral
atmospheric music in general and those of you who are looking for something
unique in music today will not be disappointed with this release. Stand-out
tracks: "Crestfallen", "The
Kindred".
